Gil Vicente (c.1465-1536)
You could say that Gil Vicente is the Portuguese Shakespeare. Father of the Iberian theater, but also a talented goldsmith, poet, musician, actor and director, Gil Vicente is one of the first great figures of the Renaissance in Portugal. His satirical style, often somewhat aggressive, cleverly points to the unequal society of his time. His plays are more than 500 years old but his influence in the style of humorous critic thinking is still well rooted in Portuguese popular culture.
Experience the local experience of our Gil Vicente Tour, which begins with a stroll through the medieval neighborhoods of the city: Alfama, Castelo and Mouraria (more information available at the reception). To get to know the work of Gil Vicente, we also suggest reading the Auto da Barca do Inferno or Farsa de Inês Pereira.
